How much money are you talking about for a doctor to set up a certified electronic health record?
When I researched the matter for my practice, I found that my total cost of converting my voice activated dictation and medical records storage to an electronic health record would be $170,000 over a 5 year period. Considering the fact that this amount represents the cost for a solo practice physician, imagine the cost for physicians practicing in a group. Group medical practices do not achieve volume savings; these numbers are the per doctor cost. Ironically, my present voice recognition dictation and record storage system, which does not meet the definition of a certified system, allows me to create consultation notes and office visit notes which are more informative, to the point, and readable than any EHR system on the market.
